Spiritual Narcissism
What is spiritual narcissism?
The term spiritual narcissism, sometimes known as spiritual ego, refers to the use of spirituality to inflate one’s sense of self importance and otherwise prop up a weak ego.Spiritual narcissism looks like:
- an overestimation of one’s spiritual mastery
- an overinflated sense of spiritual identity, using spiritual labels and concepts to elevate one’s spiritual status
- avoiding personal and social accountability justified by spiritual platitudes
- focusing only on love and light and ignoring shadow work or the integration of one’s own shadow elements
- using spiritual concepts to excuse a lack of integrity
- using spiritual concepts to gaslight others
- believing that spirituality makes them superior to others, or otherwise behaving condescendingly toward those they believe to be “unhealed” or “unspiritual.”
When people have an overinflated sense of spiritual identity and an overestimation of their own spiritual mastery, they may bypass the important stages of shadow work and integration and skip straight to spiritual teaching and coaching, placing themselves in positions of power and authority.
This is problematic, as they are likely to project their own bypassing onto others in the form of spiritual gaslighting which is emotionally harmful to their clients and followers, who often are not aware of what a fully integrated spiritual teacher looks like. Additionally, they amplify concepts that lead to spiritual bypassing and more spiritual narcissism through their messaging, teaching others to engage in the same behaviors.

Disembodied Spirituality: Is it Really Zen or is it Dissociation?
Spirituality and holistic wellness is supposed to be about the mind, body, and spirit, but a lot of toxic, ungrounded spirituality completely ignores the entire body part and only focuses on the mind or the spirit. Here’s how to discern whether or not a spiritual teacher/teaching is disembodied (and thus, not holistic).
Victim Consciousness isn’t What You Think it is
The concept of victim consciousness gets thrown around by New Agers a lot as this motivation for every single person needing to take 100% personal responsibility for everything that happens to them, but this label gets thrown at the wrong people most of the time and I’m going to tell you why.
The Fine Line Between Boundaries and Bypassing

The Shadow Self and Shadow Work’s Role In Spirituality
I talk about shadow work all the time on social media. I’ve had a few people ask me questions about what the shadow is, what shadow work involves, and express an interest in learning more, so I’ve revamped an old post to provide a better explanation, as well as make a connection between spirituality and psychology that I think is often overlooked or misunderstood in the spiritual community.
