Why Your Life is Difficult

Jan 24, 2015 | Question Submission, Spirit

Question from a reader:

“I am surprised at my higher self for choosing such difficult and frightening paths to take.  I am begging it for mercy.  Do you think that might help?”

Short answer? No. 🙂

Long answer:

Here’s the thing – the things that happen in your life are just events. They are not inherently good and they are not inherently bad. They are not inherently difficult or frightening. They are neutral. They just are what they are.

It’s YOU that labels them good or bad, difficult or frightening. Those are your emotional reactions to these completely neutral events.

Suffering of the emotional nature is self-chosen. It’s created through resistance.

What do I mean by resistance?

Let’s say you were fired from your job. You can do one of two things. You can resist, which would entail getting angry at the person who fired you, or perhaps turning on yourself and getting upset that perhaps you weren’t good enough. You can feel completely desperate and start looking for a job, ANY JOB because you’re terrified of what will happen if you can’t find one.

Or, you can accept that you lost your job, it might have something to do with your performance or it might not, but in your opinion you did a good job and that’s all that matters. You can look at it as the universe presenting you with an opportunity to find a way better job, and have complete faith that everything will work out the way it’s supposed to and in your favor.

One of those paths is painful, scary, and difficult. The other is challenging, but definitely not frightening.

They are the same path – with two different emotional reactions.

How you view your life is entirely your choice. Your higher self is not forcing you to suffer. You are.

To quote my spirit team (who I affectionately refer to as the A-Team, hehehe),

“Life will never be without it’s challenges, for without challenges there is no growth.”

How you receive those challenges is up to you, and being able to rise above that fear which creates resistance is exactly the kind of growth your higher self is looking for.

So will you rise to the challenge? Or continue to choose suffering?

My first reaction to the reading was WOW. Your words captured a theme woven into my life right now. The reading has emboldened me to take back my power and inspired me to research some books, get back to meditating and provided a focus.
